Established in 1918, Merwin Vineyards traces its beginnings to family patriarch Reuben Merwin, a third-generation farmer in the Clarksburg area. After managing a vineyard in the Florin District of Sacramento—and earning a large sum of money when grape prices skyrocketed—Rueben moved to Clarksburg and began farming at the site of the current Merwin Vineyards.
During these early years, the Merwin family grew beans, peas and sugar beets before gradually expanding to tomatoes, corn, wheat, safflower, alfalfa, asparagus and onions. It wasn’t until 1996, however, when current president Gary Merwin decided to plant their first batch of grapes—a decision he says is among the best he ever made.
While the initial harvest consisted of only Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, Merwin Vineyards, under the direction of Gary and his son Tom, has blossomed over the last 17 years and now produces seven varieties of grapes that supply wineries in Napa, Sonoma and Lodi.
